Okay so, there’s one thing that has actually been bothering me a lot lately about the Social-Justice side of tumblr and it’s basically the main reason why I try to stay completely out of it unless something appears on my dash. The language and the tone that is used by a lot of SJ blogs is just really, really toxic and I understand that you are trying to send a message out and that yes, this is probably the only way you are able to do it, but is it really necessary?
I think it’s really, really sad that a lot of you think that you have to cut other people down and call them names and be just as equally prejudiced towards other people who are, 75% of the time, only trying to learn a new way to think. I get it. A lot of you feel like you don’t have a voice, so you need to raise it to be heard. That is a natural response, after all. I just think that it’s really sad that it has to be that way, because it honestly SHOULDN’T be that way at all.
Look, I’m a privileged, white, cis-female. I am open-minded and willing to learn new things and unlearn things that I have been taught while growing up. I am trying to learn. I know that I’m going to fuck up along the way, yes, but that’s not going to stop me. And I’m NEVER GOING TO STOP LEARNING. None of us will ever stop learning. This will be an ongoing lesson.
But for once, I just want to see someone who will take a second to realize that maybe this person on the other side of the screen has not yet been educated about the issue and that maybe they are willing to hear you out and listen and LEARN SOMETHING and that you don’t HAVE to scream and shout and swear at them. Give them the benefit of the doubt. If they are unwilling to listen, then just don’t bother, they aren’t worth it.
I just … I honestly can’t stand it when I see people who are trying to gain a voice, using their voice to spread even more hate. That is not productive. You cannot use war to end a war. Education is key.
I’m not saying that you have to “calm down and be polite” either, because that is absolute bullshit and you should not be made to sit down and “grow up”. BE ANGRY. BE UPSET. But do so in a more productive way. Think of Martin Luther King Jr, or Nelson Mandela. They were angry and they were oppressed, but did they resort to violence and hate to be heard? No. They marched and they protested and they EDUCATED.
